Although static pieces of artwork can express movement, the incorporation of mechanical motion adds another dimension to any project. These images show where animation or animatronic mechanisms have been incorporated into the artwork to enhance the finished product.

Animated Gargoyle Entryway
Contracted by Entech Creative, Inc. to design and fabricate these two animated Gargoyles and columns for a Haunted Attraction.  Each Gargoyle incorporates glowing LED eyes and a head turn motion that is triggered by the guests using a special wand!  Each character was sculpted from foam, hardcoated and mechanized using DC gear motors and ball bearing supported shafts for long term use.  The head turn mechanisms also include a custom designed limit switch mechanism to allow the heads to return to their center positions after each operation.

Radio controlled T-rex - Animated Ideas show piece
This animated T-rex model was constructed to illustrate some of the many phases of design and fabrication. It shows not only the level of sculpting detail that can be achieved but also a degree of animation that can be incorporated to bring any character to life. Special attention to anatomy and movement is crucial when reproducing a life-like motion. This model utilizes only four radio controlled activators to demonstrate a wide array of motions and expressions. The model was cut away to show how the internal mechanisms work and react with the skin around them. Click on the T-rex image above to see a sample of this character in motion!

Animated Golden Eagle

Contracted by Integrity Attractions, Inc. to design and fabricate this Eagle character for an out-door theme park ride at Safari World, Bangkok, Thailand. This character utilized 2 pneumatic cylinders to control a head rotate and body movements. It was engineered and constructed for outdoor operation and finish painted to resist weathering. The computer controlled animation system was provided by Integrity Attractions

Animatronic Puppet Head

Contracted by Spitting Image Engineering, UK, to aid in the design and construction of computer controlled animatronic skeletons for multiple caricatured puppets. Working alongside a team of engineers and artists, responsibilities included animation design, puppet skin installation, character assembly, pneumatic valve system installation and onsite set-up and supervision of audio-animatronic puppets. All character sculpts, skin fabrications, painting and puppet control systems were provided by Spitting Image Productions, Ltd.

“Amsterdam Man” - working concept model
Contracted by MWA Ltd., UK to construct a working model figure from design sketches. For this model the incorporation of specific art imagery together with animated special effects were required to recreate part of the history of Holland in this animated character. This model was also used as a tool to observe the interaction of the animation with the applied artwork and to resolve any design issues. The finished piece, at approximately 12 feet in height, was eventually used as the introductory showpiece for patrons entering the Madam Tussauds, Scenerama museum in Amsterdam, Holland.
